Furnace Replacement Recommendations

Atlanta Furnace Replacement

At what point should you consider a furnace replacement for your home’s HVAC system? If your furnace has been maintained well over its lifetime, you should expect it to deliver dependable performance for about 12-15 years. We do see some furnaces last much longer. It usually isn’t the unit failed completely that determines when to replace but more often repairs can add up to more than the furnace is worth. Since 1990 furnaces have been manufactured with electronic ignition, inducer systems and control modules and many have now become obsolete with standard replacements no longer available.

Energy efficiency ratings are important when you consider a furnace replacement. Older furnaces usually operate at a 70 to 80 percent efficiency rating. That is approximately 20 percent less efficient than the newest Energy-star furnaces available today. New furnaces are designed to maintain energy, which means you save money over time when you upgrade to a higher-efficient furnace.

In order to get the most out of your furnace, it needs to be sized correctly. Each home has different heat load variables. If you feel like your current furnace isn’t keeping up with the heating demand during the winter or it cycles between too hot to too cold, it may not be the right size for your home. Make sure your HVAC contractor performs Manual J calculations, which is the standard method for sizing in the HVAC industry.

Lastly, your furnace depends on other components of the heating and air conditioning system. Correct installation of each part is important to the overall performance of your home’s comfort. To ensure correct installation, make sure to hire a licensed HVAC contractor that installs equipment based on the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) guidelines.
