Many homeowners are unaware of the signs of a failing heating system, which is why they suffer through several winters before they realize their system needs to be replaced. With winter fast approaching, you will want to make sure that you have a heating system that is in proper working order so that you and your family will be comfortable throughout the cold months. To help you decide if you are at a point where heating replacement is necessary, here a couple signs that your heater may need replacing.

Weird Noises Are Coming From Your Furnace

Furnaces are not supposed to make loud, unusual, and/or obnoxious noises; however, when heaters are nearing the end of their lives they tend to do this. If your heater is making loud popping, banging, or squealing noises, it could be a sign that your system is failing.

Your System Heats Irregularly

Another sign of a faulty/failing heating system is that is failing to distribute heat evenly. If you notice that some rooms are getting more heat than others are, it is highly likely that your heater needs to be replaced. You may also find that if your system is older, it may not be able to hold a steady temperature and that you constantly have to adjust it to stay comfortable.

Your Heating Costs Are Going Up

One of the most common and easily identified signs that your furnace is failing is when your heating bills start rising. When a furnace gets older, it is unable to work as efficiently as it once did; thusly, it will take much more energy to produce the proper amount of heat. For this reason, when your furnace begins to die you will notice your heating costs going up.

The 5k Rule

A final way to determine if it is time to replace your furnace is if it has turned into a money pit (your system is costing you a lot of money in repairs). You can tell if you are spending too much money on repairs by following the 5k rule. What the 5k rule states, is that if the cost of a repair to your unit multiplied by the units age is over 5000, it may be time to consider replacing it.

These signs are all generally indicative of a failing heating system; however, this list is by no means exhaustive, and there are more key signs to look for that can indicate a failing furnace.
