How Can I Tell If My Heating System Needs Repair?

When the weather turns cooler in Georgia, people find themselves looking to their heating system to stay warm and comfortable. It’s important to make sure that your heating system is ready for the cold weather.

Of course, one of the best ways to do that is by making sure that your system gets the proper maintenance each year. But, even with the best maintenance, homeowners may find themselves in need of repair services from time to time.

Unfortunately, many people don’t realize their heating system needs repair until it stops working altogether. However, you don’t necessarily have to wait to find out your heater could use a fix until it stops working – there are often warning signs that can alert you to problems with your system. In this article, we’ll share a few signals your heating system might give you when it’s headed for a breakdown.

Five Ways to Tell Your Heating System May Need Repair

Your energy bills are on the rise. Have you noticed an unusual spike in your energy bills? It could be a sign that your heating system could use some TLC. While it could be something as simple as a clogged filter, a rise in your energy bill could mean something is up with your heater that’s causing it to have to work harder to get the job done.

Your heating system is making unusual noises. Heating systems usually make some noise when they start up and shut down. But if you’re hearing noises like screeches, banging, or grinding, this might mean that there is an issue with the motor, fan, or some other system component.

Your home is not warming up like it should. Maybe you’re noticing that you’re turning up the thermostat but not feeling more comfortable. Or, some areas of your home might seem to stay cool even when the heating system is running. This could indicate a problem with your ductwork, thermostat, or heating system.

The compressor of your heat pump system is running constantly or short cycling. (If you have a heat pump or dual fuel system, it uses a compressor to help transfer heat from the outdoor air into your home.) Both of these issues can cause serious damage to your heating system and need to be remedied as soon as possible.

There is an odor coming from your system. If you notice a burning odor, or any unusual smell, when you turn your system on, it’s very likely that your system needs repair. Usually the smell is similar to that of melting plastic or rubber. It can indicate that a part of your system is broken or damaged, or your system may need a tune-up.

If any of these five scenarios are occurring with the heating system in your home, you should call your HVAC contractor and schedule a service call right away. The longer you wait, the more likely your system will completely break down, resulting in more extensive (and more expensive) repairs, or worst-case scenario, equipment replacement.
