How Weather Affects Your Allergies
Atlanta Indoor Air Quality
The weather plays a huge role in seasonal allergies. As we get ready to enter allergy season in Atlanta, here is some advice to help you manage your allergy responses. There is currently a local pollen alert for metro Atlanta for high counts of Elm. The most active tree pollens in late February and early March include Elm and Cedar.
The following weather conditions can affect your allergy response: wind, rain, and air pollution. Windy conditions cause pollen to circulate with higher distribution, which increases allergy symptoms.
Rain can bring relief to allergy sufferers in the springtime. If the rain is light, relief will be minimal. However, if the rain is abundant and steady, then allergy sufferers will get great relief. Steady rains clean the air of tree pollen particles, but it will promote grass growth that will create more grass pollen in the early summer.
According to the Weather Channel, air pollution has been shown to worsen allergies and asthma symptoms. Recent research has also shown that ozone can cause a chronic inflammation of the airways for asthma sufferers. The effects of pollutants are usually not felt by those affected until one or two days after exposure. Some scientists also believe that exposure to diesel engine exhaust can increase a person’s sensitivity to pollen or dust mites.
This past winter season in Atlanta was not too cold. Due to the lack of a hard freeze for many weeks, mold can be a factor with increased spore counts. As the spring season approaches, warm weather can trigger asthma attacks.
