Fun Facts for the Spring Season
Atlanta – Spring Season
The Spring season officially begins on March 20, 2013. The changes in the seasons correlate with the Equinox, which is when there is not a tilt of the Earth’s axis. Twice a year on a single day in March & September, the Earth neither inclines away from nor towards the Sun. On every other day of the year, the Earth’s axis is slightly tilted. The term Equinox is derived from the Latin language. Equi means equal and nox means night. On the Equinox days, the lack of tilt makes the Sun shine on the Earth’s equator in equal timeframes for night and day.
The exact time of this year’s Equinox is March 20, 2013 at 7:02 AM. The Vernal (Spring) Equinox will bring increased daylight, blooming flowers, pollination, and warming temperatures to North America.
There are some fun facts about the Equinox. According to legends, you can stand a raw egg on its end during the Equinox. Try this trick and see what happens. Also, if you were to stand on the Earth’s equator during the Spring Equinox, the sun would pass directly overhead. Further, the sun rises due east and sets due west.
With the onset of Spring, there are many blooming flowers to enjoy which include hyacinths, daffodils, daisies, lilies, tulips, and iris. Also, butterflies begin to gather nectar for the flowering season. Beautiful butterflies, colorful flowers, and the warmer temperatures of Spring draw us outside to enjoy nature. Happy Spring!
