Prepare Your Home for Fall
In our many years as a successful Atlanta HVAC company, we have shared a number of useful tips with our customers to help them maintain the ideal home or business environment. With the onset of autumn, we suggest going through the checklist below to make sure your house is ready for this new season.
Set the Thermostat
As the weather cools down, it’s time to turn up the heat in your home. Most homeowners are comfortable with the thermostat set at 68 degrees for fall and winter heating. Before you nudge your setting higher, keep in mind that your operating costs can increase from three to eight percent for every degree that you raise your thermostat setting.
If you do not already have one, investing in a programmable thermostat can be a great energy- and money-saver. Program it to operate at a lower temperature when the house is empty. Set it to reach your desired temperature at the time you expect to return home. Your system will use up less energy and you end up paying a lower utility bill each month.
Change or Clean the Air Filters
You should clean or change your HVAC filters regularly, but especially with the onset of autumn. Summer usually means an increased amount of pollen, dust and other allergens in the air. A significant amount of these are trapped in your system’s air filters. Changing or cleaning them will make your heating and cooling system work more efficiently and economically.
Make Sure Seals Are Air-Tight
Make sure the areas around the doors and windows in your house are properly sealed. Apply caulking or weather stripping to gaps and cracks. An air-tight house prevents heated air from escaping and cold air from entering. This means your HVAC system does not have to work as hard to maintain a comfortable temperature.
Check Your Vents
Your system’s intake grills and output vents should be unobstructed for your HVAC system to function at maximum efficiency. Make sure they are not blocked by furniture, curtains or other bulky items.
