Check the Outdoor Coils

Your outdoor unit’s coils need to be cleaned regularly because of their exposure to the elements. When you call us out for an air conditioning service call, we’ll look at your cooling coils checking their condition. Having regular maintenance for your AC system will help keep your coils clean and ready for the long summers we have in Georgia. If we think the problem involves your outdoor coils, we’ll get them clean and working correctly again.

Check the Thermostat

Thermostats are the communication center between the homeowner and the air conditioning system. They have evolved quickly in recent years, providing a variety of ways to help you cool your home evenly and efficiently. Your smart home is dependent on a working thermostat, when it stops working it will affect your entire system. We work with all kinds of thermostats and smart home systems. If the problem is a thermostat issue, we usually will just replace it with a new one.

Check for Build Up of Ice

Sometimes ice build up is a normal part of the operation of a heat pump AC. The defrost control will run a reverse cycle in order to clear the ice from the outdoor unit and go back to normal. You can also have an issue with icing on the indoor coil, which is difficult to spot because it's generally hidden. If we identify it as a possible problem, we'll get it resolved right away to avoid further issues with your AC or heat pump.

Check Refrigerant Levels and Leaks

An air conditioner that is running all right, but not cooling the house as well as it should, might be because of the refrigerant. Refrigerant is essential to the cooling of your coils and the overall level of cool air blowing through your ductwork into your home. If the level drops below what’s optimal, then it can cause problems. The only reason for low refrigerant is a leak. We will perform a thorough check of the system for the source of the leak. Sometimes the issue is an easy fix, occasionally it can require more work and time. We'll recommend a fix and give you an estimate on the cost. Once the work is done we make sure that the levels are checked using a thorough diagnostic process. Our technicians are trained to spot refrigerant problems and are EPA 608 certified for its use and disposal.

We Come Out on the Hottest Days to Get Your Broken AC Working Again

If your air conditioner is not turning on at all, or if it’s blowing warm air, or if it’s making strange or loud noises, then you should give us a call to come out and look at it.  Our staff of trained HVAC technicians know that unexpected repairs are stressful, so they will thoroughly inspect your system to find the problem. You’ll get an explanation of what's wrong in simple terms that you’ll understand. They’ll tell you what they need to do, how long it should take, and the costs involved with getting your system running again. They are very familiar with all of the common and uncommon issues that can cause an air conditioning system to struggle. Here’s a list of common problems and repairs we see when servicing an air conditioning system that’s not working:

Check the Air Filter

We’ll inspect your air filter to see if it’s dirty and clogged. The air filter protects your air conditioner from dust and debris, which can affect its ability to perform. Oftentimes, we can get your AC back to running at peak performance just by either replacing it with a new one or cleaning the existing one (depending on your unit). NEVER run your unit without an air filter, it's vital to the overall health of your air conditioner.

Check the Condensation Drain

Condensation lines are built to move moisture from your AC system to a safe location. Condensation is what happens when warm air hits something cold: a common occurrence with a working AC system. Without a clear condensation drain, there can be leaks and water damage. They can easily get clogged, so we recommend adding a safety switch in the primary and secondary drain pan that will stop the cooling process to mitigate damage to your property.

Check the Condenser Unit

Sometimes ice build up is a normal part of the operation of a heat pump AC. The defrost control will run a reverse cycle in order to clear the ice from the outdoor unit and go back to normal. You can also have an issue with icing on the indoor coil, which is difficult to spot because it's generally hidden and hermetically sealed. If we identify it as a possible problem, we'll let you know your options and costs right away.

Check the Air Handler

Within the air handler is also the evaporator coil, control board, fan motor, blower, and drain line safeties are nearby. Your evaporator coils can get dirty or clogged. Your blower motor can stop working, preventing air from flowing through your ductwork. When we troubleshoot your AC system, we include the air handler as a possible source of the issue.

Check the Capacitors

A bad capacitor is going to cause all kinds of problems with your unit. Capacitors are integral to the electrical system that keeps your air conditioning working properly. They are essential to maintaining a steady flow of electricity, but they don’t last forever. Most capacitors will last many years without needing to be replaced. Based on the age of your air conditioner and any service records we might have, we will check the health of your capacitors. Sometimes a bad capacitor will show obvious signs of damage: bulging, rust, leakage. Other times, we’ll need to test the capacitor to see how it’s performing. There are typically one or two in the outdoor unit, and one at the indoor fan motor. We replace broken capacitors with new ones, which will get you up and running again.

Signs You Need AC Maintenance or Repair

Generally speaking, all air conditioning systems need annual maintenance. By doing so, you’re helping your system to run its best and most efficiently. And, you’re likely helping to keep the warranty intact, which can save you money. However, if you need repairs for your system, it will probably show you a few telltale signs, including:

  • Dust, dirt, and other particles in the air
  • Unexplainable spikes in your energy bills
  • Some areas of your home aren’t cooling
  • AC system is making unusual noises
  • There are unpleasant odors coming from your AC
  • Your system is cycling on and off frequently
